The word "Kwanzaa" means first fruits in Swahili.
It is an African-American holiday, based on a traditional African harvest festival.
It is celebrated from December 26 to January 1.
On each day of Kwanzaa, family members light candles and discuss one of the
seven principles:
UMOJA - Unity
KUJICHAGULIA - Self-Determination
UJIMA - Collective Work and Responsibility
UJAMMA - Cooperative Economics
NIA - Purpose
KUUMBA - Creativity
IMANI - Faith
It is a time to celebrate African heritage and the importance of the family.
