The leather "community" or "nation" is actually a number of different communities or 'tribes', with a common bond of working toward the right to freedom of sexual expression. This is our weakest link as well as our strongest asset. It means that we are plagued by infighting and disagreement from people of widely different backgrounds. But the strength comes from the diversity of our communty, which crosses lines of race, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation.

There are many of us who are spending our time/energy/resources in trying to make this community stronger. We applaud the efforts of all the people involved in the projects listed here for being willing to put themselves out there despite inevitable criticisms and making a positive contribution.

WEAR YOUR COLORS

Recently while talking to someone at one of the local watering holes I enquired about the bandana which he so proudly displayed; he informed me he didn't get into anything kinky, but thought it was the "in" thing to wear. Needless to say I was saddened, first of all because he was "hot" and secondly, because he had no understanding of the symbolism of his bandanda or for that matter the "leather scene".

In recent years it has become a fad to dress "punk" (read:New School - ED) which usually means in leather. This false sense of play by some gays and straights is cruel, and leaves many a true leather man bewildered. Thus, one does not know what to expect from the little number in the corner clad from head to toe in leather -will he be a brother of the fraternity or just another "disco twinky" hangout? I'm not opposed to people wearing whatever they like, I only ask that you research and learn the history of leather and it's symbolisms so you may have a greater sinse of respect for it and the people who wear it. An in the end maybe you'll wear it because you mean it!
